Introduction

Dear Colleagues,

We gladly present the proceedings of the international conference GEOBIA 2010. These proceedings contain only full conference papers. The abstracts of all presentations can be found in the abstract book.
GEOBIA 2010 will be held in Ghent, Belgium, from June 29 to July 2. At the time of writing, May 2010, we are looking forward to a conference with 80 oral and 52 poster presentations, 4 keynote addresses, 4 computer workshops, and 170 participants from 31 countries. The conference is organized by Ghent University (Belgium), Utrecht University (The Netherlands) and University of Twente Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC) (The Netherlands), and co-organized with ISPRS. A GEOBIA special issue of International Journal of Earth Observation and GeoInformation will be published in 2011.

GEOBIA 2010 builds on the successes of OBIA 2006 in Salzburg, Austria and GEOBIA 2008 in Calgary, Canada. Over the past decade GEOBIA has developed from a new approach in geosciences to a well established sub-discipline. When comparing the proceedings of GEOBIA 2008 and GEOBIA 2010, this development is reflected in a shift from paper topics on comparison of pixel- and object-based approaches towards papers dealing exclusively with object-based studies.
